Saoradh Enterprise Partners Releases 2022 Colorado Update Report

Highlighting Cleantech Companies and Events in the Colorado Clean Range

Colorado is home to one of the strongest cleantech ecosystems in the United States, according to Boulder-based cleantech venture capital and research firm Saoradh Enterprise Partners (SEP). The Colorado “Clean Range” ranked number five in SEP’s 2021 Cleantech Innovation Hubs Survey, the first and only ranking of the best US regions for cleantech. SEP has now released its 2022 Colorado Update Report, capturing 139 cleantech events and highlighting 52 cleantech companies in the state.

Colorado’s top research universities and institutions, active entrepreneurial ecosystem, and track record of policy support make the state a leader in cleantech innovation. Seeing that investment wasn’t matching the level of innovation in the Centennial State, Saoradh Enterprise Partners set out to illuminate Colorado and other overlooked cleantech ecosystems. The resulting 2021 Cleantech Innovation Hubs Survey is a “mission-critical roadmap” for investors, corporations, and other stakeholders looking for the best places to develop cleantech.

The 2022 Colorado Update Report

SEP’s 2022 Colorado Update Report is a companion to the Cleantech Innovation Hubs Survey. The Report focuses on Colorado’s innovation hub – what SEP has termed the “Colorado Clean Range.” The Clean Range includes the Boulder, Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Fort Collins, and Greeley Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs).

The Clean Range ranked fifth in the US in the Cleantech Innovation Hubs Survey. SEP found that the Clean Range could move up a rank with improvements in funding for such areas as university R&D, technology development, and venture funding. If the Clean Range does not continue its pace of development, it risks losing one or more rank positions.

SEP identified 139 cleantech events in the Clean Range between June 2021 and June 2022. The events spanned seven categories:

  1. Networking

  2. General Support to Startups

  3. Accelerator Programs

  4. Informative Events

  5. Conferences

  6. Contests

  7. Awards/Funds/Grants

These events gave awards or recognition 62 times to 52 Colorado-based cleantech companies. SEP found 140 investors actively investing in the highlighted companies.

SEP categorized the 52 highlighted companies by cleantech sector. The majority (31%) were in SEP’s Industry Edge sector, which includes cleantech that mitigates emissions and environmental impact from industrial operations and manufacturing. The second and third strongest sectors were New Mobility and Advanced Materials. The sectors with the fewest companies were Smart Grid, Designed Environment, and Clean Food. More information on these cleantech sectors can be found on SEP’s website.

The 2022 Colorado Update Report is an extension of SEP's "deep map" of the Colorado cleantech ecosystem, which tracks hundreds of companies, research centers, and stakeholders and thousands of relationships and affiliations.

About the 2021 Cleantech Innovation Hubs Survey

The 2021 Cleantech Innovation Hubs Survey is the first ranking of cleantech innovation hubs in the US. SEP defines innovation hubs as functioning geographic ecosystems based on research funding, technology development, venture formation, and other metrics. The Hubs Survey ranks the top 40 cleantech ecosystems in the nation and characterizes their strengths and weaknesses. The complete Survey is available at no additional charge to subscribers of SEP’s Innovation Flow Reporting (IFR) service. The free whitepaper summary can be found here.
