Cleantech Innovation Highlights Series - WEEK 5
Series—Week Five
This is SEP’s fifth post in our weekly series highlighting key insights from our Cleantech Innovation Hubs Whitepaper.
Cleanatech employment density matters. SEP’s 2024 Cleantech Innovation Hubs Survey ranks the top 100 U.S. cleantech hubs based on their strength in Research, Technology, and Venture activity.
When the scores that rank the top 40 hubs are adjusted for the number of people employed in each hub (what SEP calls cleantech intensity), the top five (originally Bay Area, Boston, New York City, Los Angeles and Colorado Cleanrange) shift. The new rank is Ithaca (NY), Trenton (NJ), State College (PA), the Bay Area (CA), and Ames (IA).
In the overall 2024 baseline rankings, Ithaca ranks #33, while Trenton, State College, the Bay Area, and Ames rank #37, #31, #1, and #52 respectively. These hubs show exceptionally dense cleantech innovation, highlighting that smaller or less-known hubs can outperform larger markets on intensity. Innovation density matters.
