Hydrogen Transportation Applications Report Highlights (aircraft) - week 6

Series—Week Six

This is SEP’s sixth post in our weekly series highlighting key insights from our latest report.

Hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives are emerging as viable fuels to decarbonize many transportation sectors. At SEP, our Transport Tracking Database monitors thousands of global announcements for medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) trucks, ships, material handling equipment (MHE), buses, rail, aircraft, and SAF.

Of the 352 total announcements we tracked from 2023 to 2024, 14 were for hydrogen aircraft—excluding those powered by hydrogen-derived fuels like Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The current database of vehicle orders is available via SEP’s North American Hydrogen Market Model: https://www.saoradh.com/hydrogen.

SEP also analyzed hydrogen demand across different SAF pathways, defined as ASTM standards. Various SAF types can be blended with traditional kerosene, and EU mandates will increase SAF blending to 70% by 2050.

Our analysis estimates global hydrogen demand (about 99 billion gallons) based on:

Blending limits (blue bars)

100% SAF replacement (green bars)

Oil-to-jet SAFs (ASTM Annex A2 and A6) require the most hydrogen under current blending rules. Power-to-liquid fuels, while not yet approved for blending, would demand the most hydrogen at full scale.

SEP’s report, Hydrogen Transportation Applications, offers an in-depth analysis of vehicle sales and registration data across global, North American, and U.S. markets—benchmarking these trends against hydrogen vehicle purchases and market developments.
