This report analyzes novel research conducted by SEP regarding 388 US early-stage hydrogen companies, 932 investors in those companies, hydrogen hubs, publications and researchers, and patents. More companies are innovating in the hydrogen space than any previous cleantech sector analyzed in SEP’s Innovation Reports including solar energy, cement, steel, bioplastics, or desalination sectors. Furthermore, investments, awards, publications, and patents generally trend upward indicating that the time to invest in early-stage hydrogen companies is now. This report also explores how trends vary by technology type and location, and there are clear hydrogen hubs when evaluating company density. This is the first chapter in SEP’s Hydrogen Innovation Report. Additional chapters will be released over the coming months.
