Hydrogen Transportation Applications Report Highlights (POLICY) - week 9

Series—Week Nine

This is SEP’s fifth post in our weekly series highlighting key insights from our latest report.

Hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives are emerging as viable fuels to decarbonize many transportation sectors. At SEP, our Transport Tracking Database monitors thousands of global announcements for medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) trucks, ships, material handling equipment (MHE), buses, rail, aircraft, and SAF.

In addition to tracking hydrogen vehicle deployments, SEP provides in-depth insights on traditional transportation markets, total cost of ownership, vehicle weight comparisons, policy developments, and more.

Since 1985, SEP has identified 197 state-level bills and statutes related to hydrogen-fueled transportation. Remarkably, 97% of these policies have been enacted—a strong signal of bipartisan momentum at the state level.

On the federal side, two landmark policies have significantly shaped the hydrogen landscape: The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (2021) and The Inflation Reduction Act (2022)

The chart below illustrates a clear spike in hydrogen-related state policy activity over the last four years, coinciding with the passage of these major federal initiatives. Many of these policies either introduced new support for hydrogen transportation applications or amended existing laws to include hydrogen.

SEP’s report, Hydrogen Transportation Applications, offers an in-depth analysis of vehicle sales and registration data across global, North American, and U.S. markets—benchmarking these trends against hydrogen vehicle purchases and market developments.
