Cleantech Innovation Highlights Series - WEEK 1

Series—Week One

This is SEP’s first post in our weekly series highlighting key insights from our Cleantech Innovation Hubs Whitepaper.

SEP’s 2024 Cleantech Innovation Hubs Survey ranks the top 100 U.S. cleantech hubs based on their strength in Research, Technology, and Venture activity, offering a fresh update to our 2021 report.

A persistent commercialization gap.

One of the clearest findings from the 2024 Survey is the ongoing mismatch between where cleantech innovation originates and where capital flows.

California, Massachusetts, and New York receive 45% of cleantech VC investment—but only 25% of university R&D funding. Even more striking, 84% of VC assets under management (AUM) are based in those three states, while just 33% of cleantech startups are located there.

While these states are home to powerhouse hubs like the Bay Area and Boston, the concentration of VC resources may be leaving high-potential innovations in other regions underfunded and overlooked.

To accelerate cleantech commercialization nationwide—and unlock more climate solutions faster—diversifying investment across a broader set of hubs is not just smart, it's essential.

Let’s move beyond the usual suspects.
