Hydrogen Transportation Applications Report Highlights (BUS) - week 4
Series—Week Four
This is SEP’s fourth post in our weekly series sharing key insights from our latest report.
Hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives are emerging as viable fuels to decarbonize many transportation sectors. At SEP, our Transport Tracking Database monitors thousands of global announcements for medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) trucks, ships, material handling equipment (MHE), buses, rail, aircraft, and SAF.
Of the 352 total project and order announcements we tracked from 2023 to 2024, 60 were for hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs)—representing over 3,560 vehicles (with 98% of announcements reporting vehicle counts). 21 of these announcements—covering 370 FCEBs—were based in the United States. The current database of vehicle orders is available via SEP’s North American Hydrogen Market Model: https://www.saoradh.com/hydrogen.
To put this in context, U.S. bus registrations in 2022 totaled approximately 922,000 (U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, 2023):
⧫ 47% were public transit buses
⧫ 28% were school buses
⧫ 25% were commercial buses
This indicates that the median hydrogen HD truck is well-suited for medium-haul applications, while the top end of the range can support long-haul operations.
Our new report, Hydrogen Transportation Applications, offers an in-depth analysis of vehicle sales and registration data across global, North American, and U.S. markets—benchmarking these trends against hydrogen vehicle purchases and market developments.
