Hydrogen Transportation Applications Report Highlights (MDHD) - week 3

Series—Week Three

This is the third post in SEP’s ongoing series, highlighting key insights from our latest report.

Hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives are emerging as viable fuels to decarbonize many transportation sectors. At SEP, our Transport Tracking Database monitors thousands of global announcements for medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) trucks, ships, material handling equipment (MHE), buses, rail, aircraft, and SAF.

We conducted a unique study comparing MDHD truck weight and range across hydrogen, diesel, and electric vehicles (EVs). One of the primary concerns fleet managers face when deploying alternatively fueled trucks is weight. Alternative fuels are often associated with heavier powertrains and/or energy storage. Weight optimization is crucial for allowing trucks to haul a wide range of goods, while complying with regulated gross vehicle weight limits.

Our key finding: Fuel cell electric heavy-duty trucks are on track to achieve weight parity with diesel for long-haul applications, tied to the latest fuel cell and hydrogen storage technology. While current fuel cell efficiency already supports a driving range over 500 miles, our analysis suggests these trucks could match diesel weight for a range of up to 1,000 miles.

Our new report, Hydrogen Transportation Applications, offers an in-depth analysis of hydrogen, diesel, and electric vehicle sales and registration data for global and U.S. markets. Deep dives cover range and weight analysis, energy density comparisons, TCO review, technologies, and policy.
