Hydrogen Transportation Applications Report Highlights (MDHD) - week 2

Series—Week Two

This is SEP’s second post in our weekly series highlighting key insights from our latest report.

Hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives are emerging as viable fuels to decarbonize many transportation sectors. At SEP, our Transport Tracking Database monitors thousands of global announcements for medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) trucks, ships, material handling equipment (MHE), buses, rail, aircraft, and SAF.

In addition to tracking hydrogen HD vehicle announcements, SEP analyzed the total cost of ownership (TCO) for MDHD diesel vehicles, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) using six leading quantitative studies.

Our key findings:

MDHD BEVs are projected to reach TCO parity with diesel vehicles by 2035.

MDHD FCEVs are expected to reach TCO parity around 2040.

Several key factors influence these timelines, including fuel and electricity prices and dwell time (the time required for BEV charging).

Our new report, Hydrogen Transportation Applications, offers an in-depth analysis of vehicle sales and registration data across global, North American, and U.S. markets—benchmarking these trends against hydrogen vehicle purchases and market developments.
