Green Steel Topic Report
In 2022, global crude steel production was 1.9 gigatonnes (Gt) and contributed 5% to 7% of the anthropogenic CO2e produced annually. The average metric tonne (mt) of steel produces 1.9 mt CO2, and this footprint needs to decrease to 0.2 mt CO2 to reach the 2050 Paris Agreement goals. This report analyzes leading pathways such as electric arc furnaces, hydrogen reduction, and carbon capture. Other solutions analyzed include molten oxide electrolysis, solid and gas hydrogen-rich fuels, artificial intelligence, steel substitutes, and more. The most investable companies and industries are identified.
